The year after this watercolor was created, Romero was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship to spend a year in New York, an experience he considered transformative for his career.Description
Portraiture was one of Carlos Orozco Romero's preferred subjects throughout his career. Here, the sitter is seen in profile, looking forward within a dark space that is highlighted by her coral earrings and necklace. Romero specifically eschewed European influence in favor of indigenous Mexican style and themes.- ?-1958Mrs. Malcolm L.
