Adult Studios

Class Type: 

Spring Session Eight-week classes March–May, Tuesay & Thursday, 10:00–12:00 or 1:30–3:30; Wednesday, 10:00–12:00 or 6:00–8:00; Friday, 10:00–12:00. Special workshops offered on select Wednesdays and Saturdays. Join practicing artists in our studios to play with ideas and materials while developing skills and techniques. All skill levels welcome.

Still-Life Painting (beginners) Eight Tuesdays, March 19–May 7, 10:00–12:00. Using oil or acrylic, learn the fundamentals of painting, from organizing a palette and blending, color mixing, brushwork, and glazing techniques to the elements and principles of design and composition. Instructor: Susan Gray Bé. A partial supply kit is available for $80. $240, CMA members $210.

Creative Drawing (all skill levels) Eight Tuesdays, March 19–May 7, 1:30–3:30. With an emphasis on creative thinking, this class helps you practice close observation and attention to detail while exploring drawing techniques and concepts such as value, shading, and line. Instructor: JoAnn Rencz. $240, CMA members $210.

Drawing in the Galleries (all skill levels) Eight Wednesdays, March 20–May 8, 10:00–12:00. Hone observation and technical skills as you use charcoal, graphite, and conté crayons to sketch artworks in the galleries. Instructor: Susan Gray Bé. $245, CMA members $215; includes model fee for one session.

Workshop Wednesday: Digital Photography (all skill levels) Wednesday, May 1, 6:00–8:30. All you need is a smartphone for this introductory workshop on digital photography. Use the Gordon Parks exhibition to inspire your images, as you try out simple techniques to manipulate them. Instructor: Deb Pinter. $50, CMA members $40.

Abstract Painting (all skill levels) Eight Thursdays, March 21–May 9, 1:30–3:30. Explore your intuition and imagination with paintbrushes and color on paper and canvas. Move through the creative process as you generate ideas, investigate composition techniques, and learn the principles of art. Supply list shared during the first session. Instructor: JoAnn Rencz. $240, CMA members $210.

Composition in Oil Eight Fridays, March 22–May 17, 10:00–12:00 (no class April 19). Experiment with line, color, balance, pattern, and contrast to create both still lifes and figurative compositions in this traditional painting course. Advanced painters are encouraged to further develop ideas and techniques and to experiment with paint application. A partial supply kit is available for $80. Instructor: Susan Gray Bé. $240, CMA members $210.

Register online or through the ticket center at 216-421-7350. Registration is first-come, first-served. Most classes are limited to 16 participants. Enrollment will close one week prior to the start of class. Late registrations will not be accepted. Supply lists and class syllabi are provided within one week of the first class date unless noted.
