Moments, Intervals, Epochs: Time in the Visual Arts

Both as a physical dimension and a subjective concept, time defines human existence and experience—evident in visual production across eras and places. This year’s Cleveland Symposium, Moments, Intervals, Epochs: Time in the Visual Arts, takes time as its theme to celebrate the milestone of its 50th anniversary. Presented by the Department of Art History and Art at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) in partnership with the Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA), the Cleveland Symposium is one of the longest-running annual art history symposia in the United States organized by graduate students. This year’s two-day symposium explores the themes of time and temporality in the creation, reception, and afterlives of objects and events in the visual arts. The program features two exceptional keynote speakers, Professor Heather Pulliam (University of Edinburgh) and Dr. Sonya Rhie Mace (CMA), four sessions of graduate student papers, a roundtable on the topic of museum studies and the joint program between CWRU and the CMA, and a host of museum tours and workshops led by CMA and CWRU staff and students. All are welcome and participation is free.
