Did You Know?

In 1967, Mitchell purchased a two-acre estate in Vétheuil, France, the gardener's cottage of which had previously been home to Impressionist Claude Monet.

Description

During the final quarter century of her career, Joan Mitchell made a significant number of multipanel paintings, including Some More, comprising three equal-sized canvases whose composition bridges their shared edges. While the painting’s color and texture connote nature—such as a bed of flowers or shimmering sunlight—its rhythmic interaction of brushwork also suggests a source in music. In fact, Mitchell loved listening to opera while working in her studio during this period.
A horizontally oriented abstract oil painting across three panels features thick swathes of bright yellow and orange paint streaking in layers. These energetic colors intermingle with patches of light blue and white. Dark green and black shapes cluster along the lower edge, particularly toward the right. Frenetic brushstrokes flow across the composition from left to right, creating a textured surface where occasional fine drips of paint trickle down toward the bottom edge.
