Did You Know?

Ellen Auerbach and Grete Stern called the photography agency they formed in Germany in 1930 ringl + pit after their childhood nicknames.

Description

“Pit” was the nickname of Ellen Auerbach, who is seen here in a variant of the well-known portrait of her. Both images are exemplars of the New Objectivity style, providing an unvarnished, direct, yet still somewhat theatrical encounter with their subject.
