Did You Know?

In the United Kingdom, a mandate to clear slums was initiated in 1930.

Description

In 1936, Ellen Auerbach and her husband went from Palestine (now Israel) to London in the hope of settling there. Auerbach’s friend and former partner Grete Stern had set up a shop there. While trying to obtain a residency permit (which was ultimately denied), Auerbach photographed the London slums, which were notorious for their age, overcrowding, and poor sanitary facilities.
