Wu Hufan was one of the most influential and important collectors and artists in modern Shanghai.

Description

This gnarled pine tree overshadowing a rocky boulder is rendered in dry brushwork, using fine line strokes for its needles. Wu mentions in his inscription to have been inspired by Rocks and Pines by the woman artist Guan Daosheng (管道昇) (1262–1319). Wu Hufan collected many works by women, perhaps influenced by his late wife Pan Jingshu (1892–1939) who was a fine artist and collector herself.
A hanging scroll in black ink depicts a gnarled pine tree growing from a craggy rock in the lower left. Its thick trunk twists upward, branching into clusters of fine, radiating needles across the top and right. Dark streaks and dots texture the bark and rock, while tall grass emerges below. Chinese calligraphy and a red seal appear on the right, with two additional seals in the lower left.
