In addition to his work in printmaking, Ellison Hoover was also a cartoonist whose images appeared in newspapers and magazines around the United States.

Description

Cleveland-born printmaker Ellison Hoover studied at the Cleveland School of Art (now Institute of Art) before moving to New York City to attend the Art Students League. There, Hoover became known for his evocative and atmospheric depictions of the city. In this print, he showed figures attempting to traverse snow-covered streets and sidewalks in front of the New York Public Library on a winter day as the Empire State Building rises in the distance. For his sensitivity in drawing, he was highly regarded as a lithographer in his own time, with one critic describing such works as bearing a “certainty of touch and delicacy of tone that are remarkable.”
