Did You Know?

This portrait shows three of the thirteen wives of the ruler of Nepal.

Description

Jung Bahadur Rana (1817-1877), prime minister and ruler of Nepal from 1846-1877, made the governmental systems of England and France the models for his modernization of his country’s governance. His admiration for Europe led to the women of his court incorporating aspects of European fashion into their dress, such as the voluminous skirts and shawls seen here.
A horizontally oriented albumen print depicts six figures with dark skin tones outdoors in front of a large, triangular tent. On the far left and right, women stand holding long poles. Between them, three women and a boy sit on a striped rug, facing forward. The women wear white shawls over full, patterned skirts and headpieces. The boy wears an ornate jacket and a plumed headpiece. Foliage fills the background.
