Did You Know?

Mary looks distressed and her hesitation is depicted in the face of the Angel’s message.

Description

The panels come from the tracery window of a Gothic church in Styria showing the life of the Virgin Mary. They are among the main examples of Austrian stained glass from the early 1400s, showing the main influences of the Bohemian Beautiful Style, which is characterized by elegant figures, a vibrant color palette, and an abundance of ornamental drapery.
A work consisting of two vertical stained glass panels depicts religious scenes within arched frames. On our left, a winged angel in yellow kneels, holding a scroll before a crowned Mary in blue robes. On our right, Mary in purple holds a child while three crowned Magi kneel, offering vessels. All figures have light skin tones. The scenes feature vibrant blue and red backgrounds with intricate black lines and yellow highlights.
