Did You Know?

Without the efforts of Natalia Shabelsky, the artistry and craft of traditional Russian costumes and textiles would have been lost to history.

Description

This portfolio of 69 images provides a deep and rich historical and visual context for the 13 textiles from Shabelsky’s collection that are owned by the museum. Fifty-seven of the photographs are exquisitely hand colored—luscious examples of that hybrid artform which merges painting and photography. Forty-nine show women’s clothing of different regions of Russia from the 1600s to the 1800s worn by live models, including Shabelsky’s two daughters.
