Description

Ruth Orkin was already working as a freelancer for LIFE and other major magazines when in 1949 she submitted to LIFE’s Young Photographers Contest a series of three photographs of two little boys fighting. She titled it Lets Rassle. This is one image from the series. She did not win that year but garnered third prize in the 1951 competition.
A vertically oriented black-and-white photograph depicts two boys wrestling on a street. A boy with dark hair and medium skin tone, wearing a dark sweater, crouches over another child. Below him, a boy with light hair and medium-light skin tone lies on the ground in a herringbone coat, hand to his mouth and head turned toward our left. The soft-focus background shows figures and vintage vehicles further back.
