Did You Know?

It was not until the late 1940s and early 1950s that smoking began to be linked to lung cancer and other diseases.

Description

When Ruth Orkin took this picture of Crystal Hambro preparing to take a drag of a cigarette held by a man, such a gesture was considered romantic and sexy. Her eyes are closed and lips slightly parted, as if she was preparing for a kiss rather than a smoke.
A vertically oriented black-and-white photograph depicts a woman with a light skin tone in profile facing our left. She has dark hair and closed eyes, her lips parted slightly. From the left, a hand holds a lit cigarette toward her face, a column of white smoke rising vertically. Bright light highlights her features against a dark background. She wears a thick, dark sweater and a light-colored scarf.
