Did You Know?

Park Seo-Bo drew inspiration for his Écritures series by watching his three-year-old son attempting to write a word inside a grid.

Description

Écriture No. 22-77 by Park Seo-Bo represents one of the most important modern and contemporary Korean abstraction called Dansaekhwa, meaning monochrome painting in Korean. In this work, Park repetitively incised the tip of the pencil into a surface still wet with whitish paint, marking the ebb and flow of the drawing process. Then, he added the pencil mark, removing paint. Park considers this a process of erasure.

According to the artist, Écriture series was born by watching his three-year-old son attempting to write a word inside a grid. Growing frustrated by his failure to fit within the lines, the boy abandoned his initial pursuit, and instead decided to create his own form of writing, a kind of repetitive scribbling. Park often compared the repetitive process of drawing lines to his way of practicing meditation in the time of frustration.
A vertically oriented print depicts gray, horizontal pencil striations, evenly covering the entirety of a cloth, but fading out to the cream background on the left and right edges.
