Did You Know?

During his extensive travels to wilderness areas, Rockwell Kent visited Alaska, Greenland, Canada, Latin America, Europe, and the Straits of Magellan.

Description

Rockwell Kent was an adventurer as well as a transcendentalist and mystic in the tradition of Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson. He traveled to many wildernesses, finding inspiration in their stark beauty and austerity. This drawing depicts a seaside garden in Tierra del Fuego, at the tip of South America, where Kent stayed in 1922 and 1923. The drawing was used as an illustration for the book Voyaging written and illustrated by the artist (Putnam & Sons, 1924).
A square print in black ink features a terraced hillside garden overlooking a body of water. Dense, dark shrubs line stone paths where a figure in a light dress stands facing right. Beyond a wooden fence, distant hills frame the horizon. The expansive sky is filled with tight, horizontal parallel lines, creating a rhythmic, textured atmosphere. A signature and inscription appear in the lower right corner.
