Jimmy Baynes chronicled aspects of Black life in Cleveland from the 1950s through the 1980s.

Description

A postal clerk by day, he was a photographer at night and on the weekends. Jimmy Baynes strove to create “pictures that tell the story”—the story of Black life, music, and culture in his hometown of Cleveland. His images present a purposefully positive view of Black life in the 1950s to the 1970s, such as these women enjoying a Christmas drink together.
A black-and-white photograph depicts five smiling women with medium to medium-dark skin tones seated behind a coffee table. Each has a glass, and three bottles sit on the table in front of them. Two sit higher on a chair in the center. The remaining three women flank them, seated on the floor and leaning in. A fake Christmas tree and curtains extend behind them on our left and a box television on our right.
