Did You Know?

Starting in the 1920s, social clubs played an important role in Black communities in American cities.

Description

Social clubs often started as small groups of people who got together informally, but as they grew in popularity, many chose official names, wrote charters, and organized events including dances, parades, and picnics. In this image, two clubs have come together to celebrate New Year’s Eve in high style. The gatherings provided opportunities for networking, supporting Black-owned businesses, and further developing a sense of community.
A horizontally oriented print in crisp gray tones depicts sixteen people with dark skin tones posed behind a long, white-clothed table. Eight men in suits stand behind eight seated women in formal attire. Banners hang behind them with text reading "Le Homme BOOSTER CLUB" and "Modernistic Social Club NEW YEARS PARTY." Floral centerpieces, bowls, and bottles line the table in the foreground.
