Did You Know?

The Phrygian cap is widely depicted in antiquities, including in the CMA’s Roman bronze Barbarian, 1–100 CE (1987.64).

Description

The abstract image in Untitled evokes the Phrygian cap, a symbol of liberty disseminated during the French Revolution, which is ubiquitous in Martin Puryear’s oeuvre. Puryear has created iterations of the Phrygian cap’s form in sculpture, drawings, and prints since the early 2000s. In this work, it simultaneously evokes an animal and the natural world, which are also enduring interests for the artist.
A square-oriented print on textured paper features a central white wireframe grid forming a tall cap with a curled tip. This shape sits on a white surface slanting upward toward the right against a solid black background. A small black circle rests on the white ground to the right of the main form. Pencil markings, including an edition number and signature, appear in the lower margin of the page.
