Did You Know?

Although this work was printed using a woodblock, Mel Kendrick describes it as a “drawing.”

Description

This print belongs to Mel Kendrick’s series of “woodblock drawings,” which feature assemblages of geometric forms. Best known as a sculptor, around 1990 Kendrick began to experiment with printing plywood blocks on paper, allowing the texture of the material’s grain to serve as a compositional element. Their improvisational shapes recall his three-dimensional wood carvings, translating these works to an entirely different medium.
A vertically oriented woodcut in black ink features an abstract figure with jagged points and tapering legs. This central shape connects to a large triangular field above, which frames an inverted teardrop. Near the center, a white square frames a dark triangle. Visible wood grain creates a streaked texture throughout the composition, while pencil inscriptions rest in the bottom margin of the off-white, deckled paper.
