Description

The Gift comprises forty-eight individual watercolor portraits of women artists, writers, and curators in Emma Amos’s community in New York in the early 1990s. The women pictured belong to different generations and are from a range of racial and ethnic backgrounds. Amos created the work as a gift for her daughter India, on the occasion of India’s twentieth birthday.
A vertically oriented watercolor depicts a woman with medium-dark skin and long dark braids looking at us. Fluid washes define her features, including a brown eye on our left and a green eye on our right. She wears large white triangular earrings with yellow centers and a necklace of orange and yellow beads. A yellow garment covers her shoulder on our left, while a magenta garment drapes over her shoulder on our right.
