Did You Know?

Asawa once commented of drawing that “I had no intention of going into sculpture but found that [it] was just an extension of drawing.”

Description

Japanese American artist Ruth Asawa is best known for her woven wire sculpture, but drawings and prints played an important role throughout her career. To create this untitled work, Asawa layered zipatone, an obsolete graphic design material, to translate the interest in forms within forms characteristic of her three-dimensional work.
A vertically oriented print depicts the flower of a chrysanthemum from above in black ink on cream paper. Outlines of tendril-like petals radiate from the center of the flower, gathering in denser layers of thin petals toward the center and singular, thicker petals waving around the edges of the flower.
