Did You Know?

This photograph presents the work of two Black artists working in different media: photographer Coreen Simpson and Arthur Smith, who designed the rings.

Description

Simpson, a freelance photographer who specialized in photojournalism and fashion photography, was one of the few female photographers regularly assigned to cover collection shows in Paris and New York. Smith (1917-1982) was one of the most important modernist jewelers of the mid-twentieth century (see 2019.36, 2019.37, and 2020.91). This image is a combination of fashion photography and portraiture: the personal style of the man is as arresting as Smith’s rings on his fingers.
A vertically oriented black-and-white photograph depicts a man with a dark skin tone from behind. His hair is styled in a high, rounded crown above a shaved neckline. His hand rests over his shoulder, fingers pointing down. He wears two large rings, a square white ring and a wavy silver one, and a dark, textured garment. He is centered against a light background, highlighting the graphic silhouette of his hair and hand.
