Description

Kertész served in the Austro-Hungarian army during World War I. It was part of the Central Powers that surrounded and occupied Romania during much of 1918. Kertész noted that the man in this picture, presumably a soldier, was one of a group which “had come up by train from a ship on the Black Sea.” He rests wearily by his wagon, watching a mother dog lick her pup
A horizontally oriented black-and-white photograph depicts a bearded man with light skin tone in a military uniform and cap. He sits on cobblestones, leaning against the wheel of a covered wagon. To our left, two puppies rest near wooden crates. To our right, rifles lean against the wagon wheel. A railway car and a large metal arch frame the background on our left and right.
