Did You Know?

The artist Terry Haass fled the Nazi occupation of Czechoslovakia during World War II, settling in New York in 1941.

Description

Test Proof is typical of Terry Haass’s early work at the New York print workshop founded by Stanley William Hayter, Atelier 17. She combined three different print techniques to create a combination of hard edges and emerging and disappearing forms.
An engraving and etching depicts a horizontal abstract composition of black lines and geometric shapes on white paper. Thin, overlapping lines create a network of forms, including triangles and curved arcs. Patches of fine, net-like patterns and dark gray shading provide texture across the center and toward our right. Small black speckles are scattered throughout the image. A pencil signature and date appear in the margin below the rectangular print.
