Did You Know?

Seifū Yohei III was inspired by the Chinese mythical animals that were common on porcelain objects made at Jingdezhen in China during the Ming dynasty (1368–1644) and then exported around the world.

Description

Each of these sake cups pictures two backward-looking dragons. The highly stylized creatures resemble jade carvings.
A rounded white porcelain cup features a thin, reddish-brown rim. Across its midsection, blue underglaze depicts a dragon with an open mouth facing right, its body shaded with various blues and wrapping around the vessel amidst stylized cloud motifs. The cup tapers at the bottom to a narrow, raised base encircled by two horizontal blue lines. A smooth glaze creates a soft sheen that catches the light across the white surface.
