Did You Know?

Seifū Yohei IV won a gold medal at the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco for his ceramics.

Description

Like his father, Yohei IV also produced works with red or yellow monochrome glazes. His yellow-glazed works include this sweets bowl molded into the shape of a chrysanthemum, a set of five drinking cups CMA 2022.217, and a pair of sake pourers CMA 2022.216.
A shallow porcelain dish has a glossy, pale yellow glaze and a circular shape. Its walls are molded with vertical ridges that terminate in a scalloped rim, mimicking overlapping flower petals. Light glints off the edges of the ridges, casting faint shadows into the grooves. The vessel sits upon a small, circular foot ring.
