Did You Know?

This tripod incense burner has linear molded decorations that run around the base of the collar and down the legs.

Description

Seifū Yohei III made incense burners in a wide variety of designs and styles. The glaze is described as “crimson glaze” (kōyū); it is also dappled with dark spots of varied opacity and tiny pores throughout, which gives the container a rich, textured effect.

Yohei III had the silver lids produced outside the studio by metalwork specialists. For this tripod, they decorated the lid with a variety of flowers.
A bulbous porcelain tripod vessel features a deep crimson glaze mottled with dark brown speckles. The rounded body curves from a flared rim and rests on three short legs. A thin, vertical white ridge projects from the center, contrasting with the glossy exterior. At the rim, the glaze thins to a pale edge. Color shifts from warm red to dark mahogany across the polished, reflective surface.
