Did You Know?

Where he intended to place the maple leaves, Yohei I first applied a white color, which can be seen around the leaf edges under the glaze. This layering on top of the white brightens the color of the translucent red overglaze.

Description

Seifū Yohei I made both blue and white porcelains after Ming dynasty (1368–1644) Chinese wares fired in the kilns at Jingdezhen for export. He also made colorful stoneware in the style of his teacher, Nin’ami Dōhachi (Takahashi Dōhachi II) (1783–1855).
A stoneware vessel tapers from a rectangular, notched rim to a small circular foot. Cream glaze coats the body, marked by intersecting dark brown and blue lines that overlap like scattered needles. A vibrant, five-lobed red maple leaf accents the exterior, pointing right. Dark streaks dapple the wavy rim, where a second red leaf appears on the interior. The mouth flares slightly, dipping at each corner with a dark-painted edge.
