Did You Know?

The smaller dish is stamped with one of Yohei I’s seals.

Description

Seifū Yohei I made both blue and white porcelains after Ming dynasty (1368–1644) Chinese wares fired in the kilns at Jingdezhen for export. He also made colorful stoneware in the style of his teacher, Nin’ami Dōhachi (Takahashi Dōhachi II) (1783–1855).
A stoneware vessel features a wide, rounded body and an undulating, wavy rim. The textured, light beige surface is marked by thin, horizontal streaks of dark brown and muted blue. Two vibrant red maple leaves are painted over these energetic lines—one near the center and another reaching toward the uneven rim, evoking a crisp autumn landscape. The dish tapers to a short, unglazed circular base.
