Did You Know?

One of Brazil’s most important photographers, Mario Cravo Neto specialized in photographing Afro-Brazilian bodies engaged in religious and mystical acts.

Description

Here Mario Cravo Neto photographed an American dancer and choreographer, but one who was well acquainted with African and Brazilian as well as American modern dance. Cincinnati native Clyde Morgan received his earliest dance training at Cleveland’s Karamu House and graduated from Cleveland State University. He researched African dance and music in West and East Africa and for ten years was Artistic Director and Choreographer for a contemporary dance group in Brazil.
A square black-and-white photograph depicts a bald man with dark skin tone centered in the frame, his face partially obscured by splayed hands. Fingers from the hand on our right stretch across his furrowed forehead, while the other hand covers his mouth. Gazing through the gaps between his fingers, his eyes meet ours. High-contrast lighting highlights his deeply wrinkled skin against a black background.
