Did You Know?

Bachardy was the inspiration for novelist Christopher Isherwood’s most famous book, A Single Man.

Description

Los Angeles based portraitist Don Bachardy is known for his meticulous portraits of celebrities, but he has also made thousands of portraits of artists, authors, and intellectuals in the circle of his and his partner, novelist Christopher Isherwood. When making his drawings, he works directly from life in close proximity to the sitter in sessions that last up to four hours and require the sitter to remain still the entire time. Devoid of setting, save for a sofa or chair, his portraits tend to focus on the subtlety of emotions revealed by the eyes, nose, and lips.
