Did You Know?

The contact sheet is a twentieth-century phenomenon.

Description

The contact sheet-- a piece of photographic paper which contains positive prints of some or all of the negatives on a roll of film—was necessitated by the advent of roll film, which produced small negatives, and rendered obsolete with the advent of digital photography. Having access to a photographer’s contact reveals the artists’ thoughts and working processes.
A vertically oriented black-and-white photograph depicts a grid of twelve images arranged in three rows of four. A light-skinned woman with blonde curls wears a patterned bodysuit and sheer train. She holds various poses on a circular platform against a pale wall, with black film borders containing white text. Her arms move from her sides to her face as she looks toward the camera with parted lips.
