Did You Know?

Bruce Davidson was the Central Park Conservancy’s first artist in residence.

Description

From 1992 to 1994, Davidson made daily visits to New York’s Central Park, attempting to portray it in all seasons and times of day. His photographs capture not just flora, fauna, and humans, but also the park’s democratizing character: there people of all races, social classes, sexual orientations, and ages mixed freely and openly. The images also explore the relationship between the urban world and nature.
A vertically oriented black-and-white photograph depicts a youth with medium-dark skin tone pictured from the waist up, leaning on a bicycle and looking toward our left. They wear a dark cap and striped shirt. In the middle ground, an older man with light skin tone walks toward us. Behind them, a large domed cage sits before dense, leafy trees that fill the upper half of the composition.
