Did You Know?

Bruce Davidson was the Central Park Conservancy’s first artist in residence.

Description

From 1992 to 1994, Davidson made daily visits to New York’s Central Park, attempting to portray it in all seasons and times of day. His photographs capture not just flora, fauna, and humans, but also the park’s democratizing character: there people of all races, social classes, sexual orientations, and ages mixed freely and openly. The images also explore the relationship between the urban world and nature.
A horizontally oriented black-and-white photograph depicts three figures with light skin tones near a stream. A massive rock arch frames the scene. On our left, a thick tree trunk borders a path. Under the arch, one person stands in shadow while another crouches on a boulder above the water. In the foreground, a boy in a light shirt leans over the stream among jagged stones. Large rocks dominate the right side.
