Description

This work combines Photo Tex panels representing the working conditions in Mexican maquiladoras, a kind of manufacturing plant in which duty-free imported elements are assembled for export, with documentation of the display of the photomontages on the inside and outside of a cargo van that the artist drove through politically charged regions of Tijuana and college campuses in San Diego.
A horizontally oriented digital collage features a large semi-trailer truck parked on a flat, dusty lot. Above the truck, numerous smaller photographs depict white-walled gallery interiors, industrial sites, and groups of workers. Snippets of English and Spanish text regarding "N.A.F.T.A." are interspersed throughout. The composition uses muted tones of blue, gray, and tan, all contained within a black frame.
