Did You Know?

Davidson was arrested twice after joining the Freedom Riders in the South as a photographer for the New York Times.

Description

Davidson experienced and documented the Civil Rights protests in the American South from 1961-1965. His photographs of the movement reveal the multi-faceted nature of the fight for change. He documented protests, speeches, marches, all the while pursuing his habitual interest in the everyday lives of these African Americans fighting for equal rights.
A vertically oriented black-and-white photograph depicts two figures in a field. To our left, a person with medium-dark skin tone stands atop a large sack overflowing with white cotton. They wear a light striped shirt and cap, clutching a bundle. To our right, a man with light skin tone in overalls and a baseball cap stands on the ground, holding a small object over the other person's open palm.
