Description

Although the shimmering band on the trees may at first look like a later addition to the image, Pfahl manipulated not the photograph but the landscape itself by wrapping silver foil around the tree trunks at precisely the height of the ocean in the background. This carefully placed alteration transforms an inviting, postcard-like beach scene into a perceptual puzzle that challenges reality and illusion.
A horizontally oriented dye transfer print features a row of slender pines on a white sand beach against a blue ocean. Dark, wispy foliage fills the upper half. Each trunk is wrapped with white tape precisely aligned with the horizon line. Handwritten text in the lower white margin identifies the location as "Australian Pines, Fort DeSoto, Florida," followed by the artist's name and date (see "Inscriptions").
