Description

Paris was the only salaried staff photographer at VU, a French illustrated magazine that debuted almost a decade before its American counterpart, Life. Intended as a vehicle for fine photographic illustration and documentation, VU published numerous artists affiliated with Surrealism, many of whom are represented in this exhibition. Paris’s stories for the magazine covered wide-ranging subjects from Spanish Civil War refugees and French prostitutes to life behind the scenes at the Opéra and the Folies Bergères, where this image may have been taken.
