Description

This simple line drawing was Hewit’s first idea for Rocky River, a scene from a Cleveland suburb. She elaborated upon the landscape in a drawing executed in lithographic crayon in another sketchbook, but she continued to make changes when she drew on the lithographic stone.
A horizontally oriented graphite sketch on cream paper depicts a minimalist riverside landscape. Centrally located, two simplified buildings—one low with a porch, the other taller with rectangular windows—border a descending staircase. To the right, tall, skeletal arches of a bridge rise in the background. Loose, wavy lines suggest surrounding trees, while small, sketchy boats rest along the water's edge in the lower foreground.
