Description

Hewit prepared carefully for the lithograph Old Man, as this is one of four drawings of the sitter in Sketchbook No. 1.
A vertically oriented graphite drawing on off-white paper depicts a large tree formed by dense scribbled lines in the upper left and a cluster of simplified houses in the middle ground. In the foreground, vertical zigzags suggest a grassy bank. To the right, thin vertical lines rise above the rooftops to form a church steeple and spires. The overlapping buildings are rendered in loose, sketchy outlines against the blank paper.
