Description

Hewit prepared carefully for the lithograph Old Man, as this is one of four drawings of the sitter in Sketchbook No. 1.
A vertically oriented graphite drawing on off-white paper features a loose, gestural sketch of a gabled house. Three rectangular windows punctuate the structure's facade in the middle ground. Behind, spindly, loopy lines suggest trees and distant buildings. A rounded bush anchors the lower right foreground. Light, swirling strokes drift above the house, while the upper composition remains largely blank, highlighting the spare, rhythmic quality of the graphite marks.
