Description

Hewit prepared carefully for the lithograph Old Man, as this is one of four drawings of the sitter in Sketchbook No. 1.
A horizontally oriented graphite drawing on off-white paper depicts a small gabled house featuring a roof cupola and a tall chimney to the right. To our left, vertical strokes suggest towering trees, while loose, swirling lines represent dense foliage in the foreground. The house is rendered with sketchy line weights and minimal shading. Vertical lines define the siding, placing the structure within a rustic, lightly sketched wooded setting.
