Description

To make a woodcut, ink is applied to the surface of the block and paper is placed on top. When the block is run through the printing press, the pressure transfers the ink to the paper, reversing the design. Baumann’s press, which he purchased in 1917, could accommodate blocks measuring up to 14½ x 18½ inches, limiting the size of his woodcuts; but since smaller prints were more marketable, this turned out not to be a liability.
A horizontally oriented gray print on cream paper features two large clouds with dark, grainy outlines and a halftone dot gradient in the upper right. Near the bottom center, a tiny figure stands with arms raised. Small rectangular shapes and cloud fragments float near the composition's edges. The scene uses muted blue-gray tones and significant negative space to suggest a vast, minimalist environment.
