Description

New York City was home to the major American magazines and most of the photographers who worked for them. German-born portrait photographer Arnold Genthe had a successful studio where he photographed many theater and film personalities, including a young Swedish film actress named Greta Garbo in 1925. She had just arrived in New York. That November an image similar to this one, from the same photo session, appeared in Vanity Fair under the headline “A New Star from the North.” The following year marked Garbo’s Hollywood film debut; her rise to stardom quickly followed. Genthe’s photos are credited with boosting Garbo’s career.
