Description

Taken from an elevated and distant camera position, this straightforward black-and-white photograph of a campground overlooking the Pacific Ocean is an outstanding example of the important landscape photographs Deal created during the 1970s and ’80s. His detached, objective pictures of suburban land developments in the Southwest and southern California portray the jarring human presence in nature. This photograph stresses Deal’s desire to portray his subject matter in a seemingly neutral, documentary fashion, encouraging the viewer to concentrate on the numerous details. He hopes to illuminate what is unexpected or unexamined among the details of our daily lives. Deal, along with Robert Adams, Frank Gohlke, and six other photographers, were included in the 1975 landmark exhibition New Topographics: Photographs of a Man-Altered Landscape held at the George Eastman House, Rochester, New York.
