Description

A Manhattan physician, Ruzicka typified the serious amateur photographer working in a Pictorial style in the United States during the first half of the 20th century. He sought to produce pictures of beauty, originality, and artistic self-expression. Made soon after he took up photography as an avocation around 1909, this charming woodland scene was most likely shot in one of the parks of New York City. As the image demonstrates, Ruzicka was sensitive to the effects of light and took advantage of working in the early morning when natural illumination was soft and diffused. All of Ruzicka's early photographs were printed on platinum paper, which he preferred for its range of rich, subtle grays.
