Description

Wheeler's work was influenced by the overall patterning and shallow space of Northwest Coast Indian Art, Surrealism, and the whimsical abstractions of Paul Klee. Wheeler was the unofficial leader of a loosely organized group of artists known as the Indian Space Painters whose hard-edged, carefully planned works emphasized the relationship between positive and negative space.
A horizontal screenprint on textured paper features stylized text framed by two thin olive green lines. To our left, a teal F is built from fine, straight lines. To our right, a teal C is composed of geometric arcs. Between them, "MAN" is written in olive green and teal brush-like letters. Reddish-brown block letters read "TIME-", "LOW-", and "HART" in the center, and "OF", "-IN-", and "SPACE" below.
