A vertically standing volume features a dark brown leather spine and corners against textured brown fabric sides. Gold lettering on the spine reads "THE NORTH AMERICAN INDIAN," "CURTIS," and "VOL. V," followed by tribal names "MANDAN ARIKARA ATSINA." Five raised bands cross the leather, accented by horizontal gold lines. A small white label is fixed near the bottom, above the year "1909" stamped in gold.
