A vertically oriented photogravure in soft sepia tones depicts Chief Joseph, a man with a medium-dark skin tone and weathered face. Looking toward us, his hair is swept upward while fur-wrapped braids drape his shoulders. He wears large, flat, circular earrings and strands of light-colored beaded necklaces over a dark, fur-trimmed vest. He emerges from a dark, shadowy background. Printed text at the bottom reads, "CHIEF JOSEPH - NEZ PERCÉ."
