Did You Know?

This impression of a book of woodblock-printed designs is missing a spread that depicts a crane.
A woodblock print in black ink and gray wash depicts Daikoku, a man with light skin, seated across two pages of a book. Facing left, he reclines against a large sack while holding a mallet. He wears a dark, flat-topped hat and loose robe. Wide eyes and a sparse beard define his smiling face. Bold, calligraphic strokes and shaded washes create volume against the plain paper background.
